Mars is a cold world, with an average temperature of about –64°C (-83.2 °F). It hosts polar ice caps at both its north and south poles, made primarily of water ice and frozen carbon dioxide (dry ice). During the Martian winter, the polar caps expand as temperatures plummet, causing more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to freeze on the surface.
In summer, parts of the ice caps sublimate—turning directly from solid to gas—driving seasonal changes in the atmosphere. These polar regions are key to understanding Mars’ climate history and could serve as vital water reservoirs for future missions.
